Why we are showing this film

Barnet TUC is the local branch of the Trades Union Congress. It represents local trade unions and brings them together with people campaigning for better public services in Barnet. We support the campaigns of low-paid workers for better pay and better working conditions, and we hope this film will help us to understand the issues better.

Ken Loach's film "It's a Free World" explores the world of employment agencies employing migrant, often undocumented, workers. The main character is the woman who sets up the agency: it tries to understand her motivation, showing how she is just fitting in with the capitalist economy, at the same time as it exposes the way she exploits the people who are desperate to work for her.
