UK trade unions speak out for migrant workers

Most national UK trade unions have signed the "Migrant Workers' Pledge" coordinated by migrant rights organisation JCWI . This is very welcome. Trade union activists should push and organise to translate this into much stronger concrete action. We note that GMB and CWU have not signed. We know activists in both are pushing for them to do so. We would also draw attention to the wider demands for migrants' rights and free movement raised by the Labour Campaign for Free Movement , and the model motions for union branches, Labour Parties and other organisations they are promoting. Migrant Workers'...

Professor Dibyesh Anand spoke with Daniel Randall about the recent rise of the Hindu right in Britain, and how the left should approach questions of communalism and chauvinism within and between minority communities.

The slogan on the placard reads "There is no democracy if there is occupation", in Hebrew, English, and Arabic. Photo credit Noy Orly via +972 Magazine Thousands took to the streets in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to protest the inauguration of Israel's new government, headed by Benjamin Netanyahu and the most right-wing in Israel's history. [Update: on 7 January even larger numbers protested - see below article.] Protesters took up issues including allegations of corruption against Netanyahu, incitement against LGBT+ people, and an authoritarian turn against journalists and other dissidents (left...

Ex-members come out against UCKG

On 29 November the Guardian published an article about ex-followers of the international “evangelical Christian” church UCKG speaking out against the organisation. On 2 December this was followed by a more detailed podcast , well worth listening to. The young people some of whom spoke have accused the organisation of financial exploitation, psychological abuse and threats. They have also organised protests. The “United Church of the Kingdom of God” was founded in Brazil in 1977 by Edir Macedo , still head of the church and now a billionaire capitalist as result of his “religious” activities...

Social reproduction and the roots of transphobia (in full)

Read a substantially abridged version of this essay here (or in Women's Fightback 27 ). As revolutionary socialists, we fight for the expansion of freedom and human flourishing, and seek to rid our world of oppression and discrimination. We stand in solidarity with the downtrodden, champion individual self-determination and bodily autonomy, and organise to empower people to take control of their own lives, and to determine how they socially identify, present, and relate to others. For all these reasons and more, we fight for the liberation of trans, nonbinary, intersex, and gender non...

Collaboration between transphobic feminists and the far right — some facts

Transphobic feminist Julia Beck on the far-right Tucker Carlson's show To confront the current resurgence of transphobia requires that we acknowledge and understand the phenomenon of collaboration between many prominent transphobic feminists (who now often describe themselves euphemistically, and inaccurately, as 'gender critical' ['GC'] feminists) and the hard right. When Judith Butler wrote in The Guardian that 'GC' feminists were allying with the worst sorts of reactionaries ( 1 , 2 ), some left-wing activists were genuinely surprised or sceptical to hear such an accusation. This article is...

Social reproduction and the roots of transphobia

Substantially longer version of this piece here As revolutionary socialists, we fight for the expansion of freedom and human flourishing, and seek to rid our world of oppression and discrimination. We stand in solidarity with the downtrodden, champion individual self-determination and bodily autonomy, and organise to empower people to take control of their own lives. For all these reasons and more, we fight for the liberation of trans, nonbinary, intersex, and gender non-conforming people. This struggle flows naturally from our liberatory principles and our commitment to solidarity, combined...

Drag queens vs the far right

On 7 August, fascists from Patriotic Alternative turned up in Leeds to protest Drag Queen Story Hour. These storytimes for kids, where stories are read by drag performers, originated in San Francisco in 2016. Author Michelle Tea, who is behind the events, sought to “inspire a love of reading, while teaching deeper lessons on diversity, self-love and an appreciation of others”. The vast majority of people would surely see this as innocuous fun and it has proved to be very popular, spreading across the US and overseas. However, from 2019 onwards, white supremacists and neo-Nazis in America began...
