Shit happens

Posted in Janine's blog on ,

This title was suggested by Janine, who had an accident on Saturday night. While taking two of her kids to a Bonfire Night party, she was hit in the face by a firework. She's still in hospital, but hopes to be out in the next couple of days. She asked me to tell readers of her blog what had happened.

So far she's had five hours of operations on her right eye. Doctors still hope they can save the sight in it. But Janine is taking a typically 'glass half full' attitude towards it: hey, she says, she's still got one eye.

She will resume blogging as soon as she is able.

Thanks to Clive for posting this for me

Thanks for the messages.

I came home from hospital today. Sadly, I have completely lost the sight in my right eye. I've got some small fractures that should heal by themselves. But there is no brain damage, which is a relief! I'll be having further treatment over the next months to rebuild my eyeball so that it looks OK even though it doesn't work.

I'll also be seeing a trauma counsellor. I feel quite euphoric most of the time - nothing like a scrape with death to make you feel glad to be alive. But sometimes I feel a bit grim. I'll also be getting some advice about the kids, as Alex and Joe were with me at the time and saw what happened, which was pretty hideous for them.

Messages are very welcome - the amount of support and love that has come my way so far has really helped me. But you may not get an instant reply!

BTW, my dad told me that this year, for the first time in years, the government did not run a firework safety publicity campaign, because they could not afford to. Used up all their money bankrolling the royal family, subsidising private railway companies, paying themselves extortionate salaries, and occupying Iraq, presumably.

Glad to hear you are home from hospital, and that you still have some sight. Glad to hear also that the kids were safe and that you are all getting some support to help get over the emotional effects.

Keep well.

Sorry to hear about your awful accident and loss of sight in your eye. I was born with loss of sight in one eye. It isn't that bad. I enjoy all the posts on attila's message board - it's definitely democracy in action. Get back on your feet soon. Best wishes.
