Nursery nurses - Back to local negotiations

Nursery Nurses across Scotland have been on all-out strike from 1 March 2004.

The basic pay for this vitally important job runs from around £10,000 for a newly qualified nursery nurse up to £13,800 after 10 years' experience. In a dispute that has been running for three years UNISON have made a claim for nursery nurses to take their pay up to £14,000-£18,000 with merit for nursery nurses working longer hours and weeks. They also want a career structure for promoted staff.

Agenda for Change (AFC), the proposed new National Health Service pay system, dominated Unison's health conference, in Glasgow, 26-28 April, although the key decisions were scheduled for a special conference later in the year.

The "Big Four" start moving

The "big four" trade union leaders - Tony Woodley of the TGWU, Derek Simpson of Amicus, Kevin Curran of GMB, and Dave Prentis of Unison - have laid down their demands for the next Labour manifesto. They include a big council house-building programme and an end to the Private Finance Initiative.

Defend Kola Shokunbi

Unison shop steward Kola Shokunbi has been dismissed by Initial Hospital Services Limited from his job as a cleaner at Whipps Cross University Hospital Trust.

Kola was dismissed on Wednesday 7th April 2004.

Support Scotland's nursery nurses!

Nursery nurses in Scotland are continuing their indefinite strike action after the Scottish Parliament rejected calls for a national pay settlement. Around 300 of the 5,000 nurses on strike demonstrated for improved pay outside the Scottish Parliament as MSPs debated the issue on 11 March.

UNISON Service Group elections Vote United Left!

The left in UNISON has missed an opportunity to follow the lead of other unions like Amicus and the TGWU when the Service Group Executive Committees are elected next month.

The Service Group Executives are the "industrial" leaderships of the union. Although they lack the profile of the NEC, they have decision-making powers on issues of pay and conditions and negotiations, thus making them just as important as the NEC. Yet the left, traditionally, hasn't contested them. After a better showing two years ago, this seems to be the case again in 2004.

Unions challenge Blair on gay equality

Trade unions are challenging the Government in court to give full employment rights for their lesbian, gay and bisexual members.

The case begins on 17 March at the High Court in the Strand, against the Government's inadequate implementation of the EU Sexual Orientation Employment regulations, which were brought in on 1 December last year.
