Not a done deal

New CSAs (and other grades too?) have been sent letters from management "updating" them about "Fit for the Future". The letters are thinly disguised propaganda for the bosses' plan.

Despite referring throughout to "proposals", the letter is clearly designed to present "Fit for the Future" as an inevitability, and undermine resistance to it. The letter emphasises management's expected autumn 2015 start date.

CSAs are told our role will remain "substantially unchanged": ask any working CSA whether closing their station's ticket office and reducing frontline staff will leave their job "substantially unchanged", and they'll laugh in your face.

The letter also refers throughout to a "consultation" with unions, suggesting unions' input has been taken into account in the "Fit for the Future" proposals. This is a downright lie: management presented its plan, fully-formed, in 2013. RMT and TSSA oppose it, outright. At no point has a meaningful "consultation" taken place, and negotiations with management since November 2013 have consisted of management simply reiterating their plans.

The union position remains clear: not one job loss, not one ticket office closure. The fight over "Fit for the Future" is far from finished, and while it goes on, management's plans are not a fait accompli.

A solid strike in February stopped management in their tracks, forcing them to pause the implementation of the plans and return to the negotiating table. Sadly, this letter shows that they still intend to force through their plans against workers' wishes. That means we'll have to strike again to stop them.
