Taking Chances with Private Contractors

Having your station refurbished usually involves a bit of inconvenience and discomfort - so it's best if it doesn't last any longer than necessary. But London Underground's policy of contracting out work like this means that it is taking more time than it should: as Chancery Lane staff and passengers are finding out.

Chancery Lane has been like a building site for long enough, but it has recently emerged that the refurb was put on hold when the private contractor went bankrupt and the job had to be retendered. So, more time spent working in unpleasant surroundings as staff pay the price of LUL's speculation on the private market.

It's one more reason why London Underground should do its own work itself - rather than contracting it out to unreliable profiteers.
