637 Assaults on Tube and DLR staff

Posted in Tubeworker's blog on ,

One Tubeworker’s bedtime reading was the British Transport Police ‘Policing Plan for 2010/11’.

The report says that there were 637 assaults on staff on London Underground and the DLR last year. The report goes on to explain that 'The visible presence of rail staff, PCSOs and police officers can reduce the fear of crime dramatically.' Presumably not just the fear but the eventuality of crime.

Going further than that, how about the fear of assault that staff will feel when, if LU gets its way, we will be working alone much more frequently?! With the ConDem cuts to the police force budget as well, the BTP will be even less reliable in 'protecting' us than they are now. We need sufficient staff on the stations and other workplaces working together at all times.

Tubeworker believes we must do whatever we can to ensure that the figure of 637 assaults isn’t allowed to rise due to station staff job cuts or any other reason.
