RMT infrastructure workers to strike at GrantRail Publication Date: June 1 2006

AROUND 250 RMT members at rail infrastructure firm GrantRail are to strike for 24 hours from a minute after mid-day on Saturday after the company failed to honour a pledge to recognise the union, despite it representing a majority of the workforce.

"It is time for GrantRail to do the honourable thing and recognise the union that the majority of its workforce have chosen to represent them," RMT general secretary Bob Crow said today.

"Last summer the company said it would reognise RMT if we could show that the majority of the workforce had joined. We did that, but for some reason the company has failed to stand by that pledge.

"GrantRail already recognises those RMT members who transferred to GrantRail from Jarvis contracts, so it is hardly asking for the moon to expect them to enter a proper working relationship with the union.

"For a company that styles itself as a major player in the rail infrastructure industry, it is baffling why they appear to have buried their heads in the sand.

"Only 19 people voted against taking strike action and it should be clear to the company by now that its workforce is serious about being represented by a union with more than a century's experience in the rail infrastructure industry," Bob Crow said.

Grant Rail Dispute

Spent an hour and a half last night on the Grant Rail picket line down at Waterloo to show some solidarity to our comrades.

What a terrific bunch of lads dedicated to their cause and they proved this by how solid their strike was.It was a good natured picket and a persuasive one too with at least 3 new recruits to the RMT during my brief time there including a Supervisor.

At the 14.00 picket solidarity had been shown with various elements of the RMT turning up including Mssrs Law and Leach amongst the more high profile members but also rank and file members from Bakerloo,Stratford No 1 and Hammersmith Branches were there in support too.

At the 22.00 hr picket line there were representatives from Neasden Branch (LUL),Hainault Depot(Metronet), Northern Line(trackwork) and also Baker Street Engineering.

This showing sums up what the RMT stands for, that it is an all grades union and that an attack on any of our comrades is an attack on us all in the Union.RMT may not be the biggest union but we are a fighting and active union and it was a pleasure and a privilege to stand side by side with the Grant Rail workers.

We must continue our support because it is only by showing solidarity that we can show our strength and prove our effectiveness.
