Message from the DLR frontline

Morning, I've just finished working the late shift on the Docklands Light Railway and when I came in I did a google on coverages of our previous votes for strike action and your came up top.

We are about to be balloted by the RMT for strike action over proposed changes that will affect members who are station staff (by law we have to have specially trained staff present at all times at our below street level stations), shunters, and rolling stock engineers.

We might not have the numbers that London Underground does, but we have a lot of committed members who will defend our working conditions and our pay even though management, who of course are only acting in the best interests of shareholders under the new franchise, are seeking to make people work more hours for less pay.

RMT Regional organiser Bobby Law was present at a meeting that saw people from at least 5 different parts of the company support everyone in the true spirit of being a trade unionist.

All this of course comes under a supposed Labour government and a mayor who is meant to be a solid left winger.

In my job on the trains I get verbally abused daily, spat at occasionally and every so often have a knife pulled on me. Needless to say Burgers Teas and Pies (aka the British Transport Police) never turn up when needed. Yet we still have the highest traveller satisfaction ratings going and consistently win industry awards.

Maybe some readers of this site could write to MD Tony Thomas and try and wake the man up to the reality of public transport in the 21st century.
