Playing truant: the Education Bill and George Galloway

Posted in Janine's blog on ,

Here is the list of rebels who voted to amend the appalling Education Bill. Several cheers to all of them. I made my feelings on the subject known earlier this year at TUC women's conference.

My own local MP, Meg Hillier, is not among the rebels, so will (probably) be receiving a stroppy letter from me. And neither is the MP for the neighbouring constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow. As he did previously on the Terrorism Bill, George absented himself when it was time to take a stand.

Could any of his followers please tell me: what is the point of George Galloway being in Parliament?

GG himself says in an interview in the Independent (sorry, not linking, cos it's one of those subscription ones): "I'm in the House every day, I don't vote for Tony Blair's foregone conclusions, except where they are central to my politics." "Don't vote" being the operative words, rather than "vote against".

Respect's leaflet on the Education Bill urges people to contact their local MP. Perhaps if a few more residents of Bethnal Green and Bow did so, he might turn up next time. Another notable absentee, though, is any opposition to faith schools in the Respect leaflet.
